The evidence linking alcohol use with disease is strong. Excess alcohol increases the risk of liver damage, high blood pressure, and some forms of cancer. Like sugar, alcohol contains empty calories. Alcohol can kill the appetite for healthy food and affect how the body absorbs and uses nutrients in foods. Malnutrition is common in alcoholics. Protein and vitamin deficiencies can occur, resulting in anemia, neurological damage, and skin problems. 

Even in moderate quantities, alcohol can affect balance, coordination, and judgment. Never drink before driving or operating machinery.
