You can calculate your body mass index (BMI) by using the following formula:

Weight (in kilograms)
------------------------
Height (in meters) squared

To convert your weight and height to metrics, note that 1 pound is equal to 0.45 kilogram and 1 inch is equal to 0.0254 meter. For example, a woman who weighs 120 pounds and is 64 inches tall also weighs 54 kilograms (120 X 0.45) and is 1.63 meters tall (64 X 0.0254). Her BMI would be 54 / (1.63 X 1.63), or about 20.3, which puts her in the normal range. Normal, overweight, and obese ranges for BMIs vary, but in general, a BMI of 20 to 25 is considered normal, 25 to 30 is considered overweight, and over 30 is considered obese. Using these ranges, up to 33 percent of the U.S. population should be considered obese. Obesity is more common in women than in men.
