Some of these statistics are disturbing, especially when you consider that the survey would have been of the managerial staff who carried out the sackings, those very people whom could have avoided a large percentage if they had been better at their job.
Those highlighted in bold can be greatly affected by managerial
effort.
- 35-40% Employee Incompetence
- 15-20% Inability to Conform with Team Spirit
- 10-15 % Dishonesty
- 10% Negative Attitude
- 5-10% Lack of Motivation
- 5-10% Refusal to Follow Orders
- 5-10% Other.
From the above, management must take some responsibility in 70-90% of sackings. It's hardly surprising that sacking situations are so stressful, often the employee wants to jump up and say,
"It's not all my fault, have a look at
yourself!"
One needs to tie this in with three other areas of
concern:
- What motivates employees (greatly affected by
management)
- Why employees fail (can be dramatically reduced by management
action)
- Why some companies have high staff turnover
- The fact that they are your greatest resource.
Now!: Why don't you consider the costs of hiring and training staff (include lost productivity until they are really up to speed) compared with the costs associated with a little training, motivational tactics, recognition, praise/reprimand if warranted, and just reward. I feel you will find it a very one-sided
equation.
WOULD YOU SACK YOURSELF?
